“People helping animals. Animals helping people.”
– a PAWS watchword
In its 7th strong year of championing advocacies, the XS Group chose the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) as its beneficiary for XS Gives Back, which was held on December 18, 2018.
PAWS is a non-profit organization which is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals, especially on Aspins (Asong Pinoy) and Puspins (Pusang Pinoy). As the organization who coined both these terms of endearment for our native dogs and cats, it continues to act as a beacon of hope for a future free of discrimination against any animal regardless of breed and appearance.
It is in this light that Sharm Lopez, Project Manager of XS Gives Back 2018, spearheaded the project of feeding the rescued animals of the PAWS’ shelter in Quezon City.
“We wanted to do something different from the past XS Gives Back projects that we have done and since everyone from the office is into animals, specifically dogs and cats, we decided to do it there,” she said.
Asked about the importance of giving back to the community, Sharm believes that it gives us a sense of purpose—a reminder on why we do what we do. She continued by saying, “We couldn’t really sit around and surround ourselves with all the blessings given to us and not pass it on to people, or even animals, in need.”
From the planning to the actual visit, each XS Group employee took part in this annual event by either joining the team who prepared the food or the ones who fed PAW’s furry residents. Some have actively participated in doing both tasks including Ferlie May Roma, the Project Coordinator; who, for three years, has played a part in this year-end experience. Being true to the XS Vision of being a tool for creating change, she wants to show the world how grateful the Group is for the fruitful and productive year it has been gifted with.
“XS Gives Back lets me experience the joy of being able to help – giving love to all the living creatures around us and seeing the smiles of the beneficiaries. There is no small help or big help. As Mother Theresa said, ‘Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love,’” she added.
The entire XS Group spent their Christmas holiday knowing that they have extended a ‘helping paw’ to a community that saves abandoned animals that are, when you think about it, just like us – loving, resilient and most importantly, cuddly.
