8 Tips On How To Flatlay

Flatlay with arranged products are so popular. It’s a type of photography taken from above looking down on subjects and it is a composition from a bird’s eye view perspective.

Here are the 8 steps to ace the trend:

1. PREPARATION IS THE KEY

This might take you a while but this is the most important and the longest part of the process because you will be preparing things to do from start to finish. You have to list down things in the process and secure options in case the first one fails. You have to have a wide range of options.

2. THE USE OF NATURAL LIGHT

Brightly lit photos are freaking bomb. If you’re not a professional photographer or someone who doesn’t any lighting gear, it’s best to use natural light. In here, you just have to be aware of shadows so that photos won’t be ruined.

3. COLOR PALETTES ARE A THING

Of course, for it to appear visually-appealing, you have to pick and stick to your chosen color palette.

It doesn’t matter what color that is, as long as it matches with all your props and subject and you’re good to go.

4. ESSENTIAL BACKDROP

Backdrops are the guiding principle for your photos and products to stand out. It doesn’t have to be that grand because everything still needs to complement each other.

You can use either vinyl backgrounds, rustic ones, canvas, rubber floor mats, and anything that is your type.

5. GOOD COMPOSITION

Composition is very important. It is also part of the preparation. This is how you see that outcome of your project.

You can also put the subjects in front of the camera, check the perspective and from there, you’ll arrange the overall look that will fit your frame.

6. TELL A STORY

You should tell a story when creating flat lay.

Remember that photographs are stories in visual forms. The shot can be the overall story which makes selecting props and background as your highlight.

7. THE USE OF TRIPOD

Using tripod can help you stabilize your shots. It is a great way for you to capture the right angles and perspectives right.

Also, mastering the use of tripod can help you minimize the risk of shadows or tripod legs inside your frame.

8. THE USE OF LIVE VIEW

The use of live view in DSLRs are important. It minimizes unbalanced perspective by framing everything at the correct angle.

This is a great way to make certain shots in square and non-square compositions.
