When it comes to animated films, Filipinos also thrive their way in showcasing word-class talents. Hence, underrated—these shows still deserve that spot. Not that it was only written good, but also the magic of achieving it in different art forms is something to be proud of.
Aside from supporting our own pride, we are also aware that there are Filipinos out there who work and get to showcase their one-of-a-kind talents in Pixar, DreamWorks, and other big studios outside the country.
Here are some of the animated shows that are proudly made in the Philippines:
Saving Sally
Saving Sally is a live-action animated series released in 2016, and it’s a rom-com series starring Enzo Marcos and Rhian Ramos. This drama is about the story of Marty—who is an aspiring Philippine comic book artist. He fell in love with his best friend, Sally, who is a gadget inventor.
There are a lot of exciting parts in this show as they battle towards different monsters and defeating them also.
Because of the impressive art style of this live-action film, people can’t stop but compare its beauty to 2010 geek movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
RPG Metanoia
RPG Metanoia is a 2010 film that took 4 years in the making. This show was made of 26 animators that exhibited animation and realism into one. This film is a story about an 11-year old Nico, who logs on to a role-playing game in which he was transformed into a hero of his own and then one day was suddenly bombarded by a virus that became a threat in the real world too.
This show was dubbed in and performed by famous artists in the industry namely: Zaijan Jaranilla, Mika De La Cruz, Aga Muhlach, Vhong Navarro, and Eugene Domingo. This is the first ever 3D animated film in the Philippines.
Hayop Ka!
Hayop Ka! is a fully animated-feature film by Rocketsheep Studio released last 2020. This is a story about Nimfa, a perfume salescat who works at a big mall while juggling the life of having to provide for her family—she then meets two dogs, a mongrel and a business dog, and she definitely have to choose between the two of them.
In this film, you can see the improvement of the animation here in the Philippines while also developing good and catchy storylines and scripts that people love. The animation is inspired by the anime style, which many people love, as people are very stunned by the results because of the distinct art style that this film showed.
Hayop Ka! was dubbed by the famous actors: Angelica Panganiban, Sam Milby, and Robin Padilla.
Manang Biring
Manang Biring is a comedy drama about a terminally-old lady who has learned to accept her fate. This film is one of those films in 2015 that won awards such as Best Film and Best Music.
The first thing that you’ll notice as you go on with this show is the unique visual approach—it was set in black and white with a mix of hybrid and live-action footage set in that artistic approach.
The characters are seen through a filter that’s why it will look like they are made out from a sketch style.
This film will capture the hearts of its viewers with its simplicity and the jampacked editing and sound which made it an overall winner.
