Wait, this is not Gravity Falls and Adventure Time combined.
Hilda is an animated television series based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novel of the same name. It follows the life of an 11-year-old girl who moved in the city of Trolberg where she befriends the most dangerous monsters.
This show doesn’t have a single running storyline but instead features individual episodic stories. One episode is about Hilda helping a talking bird regain its memory, while the next one covers her adventures with community service and onion men.
But the story is continuous: pieces of each episode are woven throughout the entire series. The service organization Hilda joins is foreshadowed in her adventures with the bird, and both episodes establish later events. Everything leads up to the final episodes summarizing it all nicely.
Many people from Reddit and Twitter are talking about how Hilda’s animation style reminded them of Gravity Falls and Adventure Time. Well, 2D animation art style is one of those styles you can use if you want to catch a wide range of people who are into animated series because this style is very distinct, always giving nostalgia.
Luke Pearson and Director Andy Cole differ in terms of art style, meeting in the middle might be too hard most especially if this is based from a graphic novel—things should kind of match. People argue over the matter that it indeed captured a minimalistic approach. The art style is very simple, not even complex, which makes it even amazing. ‘Hilda’ was first combined with a 2D animation, a popular art style to get a really grasp of a younger generation audience and artists who made reviews on this show’s animation style mentioned that it’s somewhat a mixture of 2D incorporating minimalism.
Traditional aspects are also seen through this show. The colors are broad, clean, and there are rounded lines sketch out of iconic pieces only seen in graphic designs.
The approach of having muted colors still gave out appeal. Although it might be far from realistic, Hilda creators still proved that art is breathtaking, every movement is elegant, and the storylines matched the animation style and the characters’ personality.
‘Hilda’ is also a manifestation that this art style is revival. The last time people saw a type of animation similar to this might be sometime 2019 and this is just a good example that art lives and it can always be mixed with the modern art style present in today’s generation and art world.
