What film traumatized you as a kid?
We all should agree that at one point, this creepy film ‘Orphan’ got into our bones the moment we watched it for the very first time.
Packed with interesting plot and twists, who that after all these years, we’re still getting a prequel?
‘Orphan’ is a 2009 psychological horror film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra starring Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, Carol Pounder, and Jimmy Bennet. It centers on the story of a husband and a wife who lost their baby and found themselves adopting a mysterious kid from an orphanage. As the story goes, it is revealed that their adopted nine-year-old girl is actually a 33-year-old woman with a rare condition that stunted her physical growth, allowing her to look like a child.
‘Orphan’ is a film that has haunted so many kids and young adults up to date. It is considered as one of the most unforgettable films of all-time because of its unique take on its story.
Now, this prequel is already making a noise since 2020. It will be on the title ‘Orphan: First Kill’ and it will be directed by William Brent Bell, whose previous credits include multiple horror features such as The Devil Inside, and The Boy and its sequel.
This sequel will focus on 33-year-old Leena, who will assume the identity of Esther for the first time, and who in the course will pose as the missing daughter of the couple Katie and Richard, attempting to separate the two and committing her “first kill”.
The cast includes Isabelle Fuhrman, who returns to reprise her role, along with Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, and Matthew Finlan. According to Fuhrman, this ‘Orphan’ prequel is going to be really extra creepy. As the actress herself, she is really creeped out playing her role and there were instances where she imagined it every single time.
“I was there every day. I know how we did this. I know all the tricks, and I’m so thoroughly disturbed right now, because I somehow am nine years old again, and it doesn’t make any sense… I was like, how do I revisit this part and then also convincingly play a kid? Because that was the easy part last time, the hard part was trying to be an adult. Now the hard part is I have to be kid.” She said in an interview.
Fuhrman’s come back was a challenging process. The actor has also been open about distancing herself from this type of genre and being more involved gave her some creative control. She also revealed that no special effects or intricate makeup were used to make her appear younger, something she was praised for as well. The director mentioned that aside from digital help applied, the majority of the film used practical techniques.
We all know how shocking it was to see ‘Orphan’ and it’s just good that it’s getting the praise it deserves. From the plot twists, to script, to musical scoring – this film gave us a number of chills with a haunting vibe we will never forget.
Fans are excited but we have to wait a little bit longer. Other sites claimed that ‘Orphan: First Kill’ will be released this August but there’s no official release date announce yet.
