This New Boy Group Is Making A Noise In The P-pop Scene

This country is really dominating when it comes to music, new talents, and adaptation. While many may think today that Pinoy pop (P-pop) is a direct copy from the famous Korean pop (K-pop) industry, the former is actually a sub-genre branching out from the Original Pilipino Music (OPM) genre.

P-pop emerged from the early 70s, throughout the 90s and late 2000s that was also the influenced by live band acts like Neocolors, Side A, and Freestyle.

It was only in the 2020s that P-pop transitioned into having a more structured industry.

BGYO has become the latest addition to the Philippines’ growing P-pop scene.

This five-member Filipino boy group began their transformation and debuted under Star Magic. Composed of Akira, Gelo, JL, Miki, and Nate—their songs are mostly focused on social issues concerning the young generation, youth empowerment, and self-love.

Their single “The Light” earned praises all over charts. BGYO became the first Filipino act charted at number one—the fifth Filipino artist to appear on weekly Billboard Next Big Sound chart.

This group proved that they really had the charm, talent, and guts to make it through the music industry—thriving, going strong.

Another ecstatic news is coming: they’ll be showcasing their Filipino talent and craft together with their sibling group, BINI, at the ‘Be You’ benefit concert by the famous K-pop girl group ‘Red Velvet’ this July.
