Disclaimer: This is not your superhero movie. It’s just sick af to see Gosling and Evans in one go.
Netflix viewers are taking to social media to say ‘The Gray Man’ is actually flawlessly good – despite what critics think. The action-packed thriller – which is an adaptation of Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name – stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as covert agents. How crazy is that?
The film follows Sierra Six, a black ops mercenary and reformed criminal working for the CIA. After uncovering corruption within the agency, Six goes on the run. Tasked with hunting him down is former CIA agent and ruthless Lloyd Hansen. In order to get to Six, Hansen chases his handler, Donald Fitzroy, and Donald’s niece, Claire. With only a handful of allies, including CIA agent Dani Miranda and Margaret Cahill, Six needs to rescue Claire and Donald, evade capture, and ensure the truth of the CIA’s corrupt agents is revealed.
It’s an unending move of running and fighting battles to freedom and to the locket with secret USB on it.
Alright, no more spoilers.
The film boasts a star-studded cast including Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Alfre Woodard, Billy Bob Thornton, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, and Regé-Jean Page. All of them have proven their acting talents in a wide range of films. Everything is falling into place, not falling flat. It’s just so balance people love it.
Netflix reportedly spent roughly $200 million on the film, and it does show. Audiences will be treated to a number of fast-paced, well-choreographed fight scenes and sizable action sequences.
None of the plot twists or major reveals this film has in store are unpredictable. Things are for sure: there are corrupt agents, an over-the-top evil mercenary leader, and a kidnaped little girl, among many other tired tropes.
This movie feels like a superhero movie with its fights and chases, with one special agent subduing multiple highly-trained assassin. How do you like that one?
At present, Netflix is cementing plans for it to become a major spy franchise starting with a direct sequel starring Gosling with directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to helm the project. The Russos and AGBO’s Mike Larocca will produce along with Joe Roth and Jeffrey, who will be writing the sequel.
A separate “The Gray Man” spin-off film is also in the works, written by screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. The installment is “set to explore a different element of ‘The Gray Man’ universe” with a logline still under wraps.
The Gray Man is available for streaming now on Netflix.
