If you’re going to rate the trailer, it’s definitely dark and magical.
Netflix have finally given Addams Family fans a new, deeper look at their upcoming Tim Burton spin-off series, Wednesday.
It was totally action-packed. In the trailer—Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, sicks a school of piranha on the water polo team. It’s a fun, bloody way to set the tone for director Tim Burton’s new mystery-comedy based on The Addams Family. And while high school-aged Wednesday Addams clearly enjoys seeing a swarm of angry fish bear down on high school jock Dalton’s junk, the more surprising element of Wednesday is that she appears to have found an educational institution and social circle more suited to her dark disposition: Nevermore Academy.
‘Wednesday’ will apparently show the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams actually enjoying herself in a high school setting — after being expelled from eight other ones — a concept that seems almost as unorthodox as Wednesday herself. Her classmates range from creepy to kooky, while situations both mysterious and spooky will keep Wednesday and the Netflix audience entertained.
Animated versions of the family have appeared regularly in film and TV since the 1970s, and Fox unsuccessfully attempted to revive the original TV series in 1998 with The New Addams Family. But it was two live-action feature films in 1991 and 1993, respectively, that defined their canonical representation in popular culture: The Addams Family and Addams Family Values.
Burton famously turned down the opportunity to direct the 1991 feature film. He was also originally supposed to direct a stop-motion animated film reboot. The result was The Addams Family (2019) and The Addams Family 2, released last year.
The series also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez and Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday’s brother Pugsley. Victor Dorobantu plays Thing and George Burcea plays Lurch. Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the ’90s films, is set to appear in the series.
There’s still no official release date, but expect Wednesday to premiere on Netflix sometime this year.
