Top 8 Movies That Serve The Best Y2K Fashion

Imagine this, it’s year 2000 again and your favorite movies are back on screen again.

Y2K is the shorthand term for “the year 2000,” and refers to a widespread panic that took place in 1999 when people worried that computers would no longer be able to operate at the turn of the millennium. The culture-defining fashion trends that arose in the years that followed, such as colorful hair clips, hoop earrings, miniskirts, and crop tops, eventually became dubbed Y2K fashion and were heavily influenced culture and hip hop.

Major throwback! Here are the best Y2K movies that bring the best nostalgia in both fashion and tv scene:

1. MEAN GIRLS

“You can’t sit with us,” “On Wednesdays we wear pink…” and the list goes on for the most iconic moments of 2004 film Mean Girls. Featuring some of today’s biggest stars like Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried as the Plastics, the movie was a style pioneer in the early ’00s with pieces like pleated miniskirts, high heels, Converse shoes, and more.

2. COYOTE UGLY

Coyote Ugly tells the story of a cowboy-themed dive bar in Manhattan’s East Village that employs the business tactic of hiring beautiful employees. From low-rise jeans and belly-button piercings to fringed halter-neck tops and middle parts, the looks served in Coyote Ugly were everything Y2K realness.

3. LEGALLY BLONDE

Starring Elle Woods played by Reese Witherspoon, in here we can see some chic fashion with Elle wearing some of our favorite pink outfits from her Halloween bunny look to sunglasses, leather jacket and skirt for her first day at law school.

4. SHE’S THE MAN

She’s The Man broke some big gender roles with Viola Hastings, played by Amanda Bynes, dressing up as her twin brother Sebastian to play on the soccer team. From girly moments at the pageant to tomboy styles in baggy tees, jeans and hoodies, the movie definitely shows some of the most popular styles of the decade.

5. THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

Finishing off the list is The Devil Wears Prada, still a favorite to many fashion lovers. A character based on Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Meryl Streep plays the role of Miranda Priestly who hires journalist Andy to take on an intensive, fast-paced fashion job as her secretary. One of the best scenes of the film is when Nigel gives Andy a makeover, dressing her in designers like Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Narciso Rodriguez, and more.

6. JAWBREAKER

The dark cult comedy follows a group of popular, exceptionally-dressed teenage socialites who scramble to cover up their accidental murdering of one of their best friends. They deal with their dilemma the way all problems were solved in ’90s teenager movies—by plucking up a female dork with deeply-buried prom queen potential to make over in a process that involves a plethora of tube tops, color blocking, and kitten heels.

7. 13 GOING ON 30

Teenager Jenna Rink, played by Jennifer Garner, fulfills her dream to become a big-time fashion magazine editor after receiving magic dust as a birthday gift from her bestie Matty, played by Mark Ruffalo. Luckily for viewers, both the 13-year-old and the 30-year-old Jenna have impeccable Y2K style, sporting outfits and accessories ranging from pink slip dresses with floral embroidering to chandelier earrings and chunky, open-toed heels.

8. CONFESSIONS OF A TEEENAGE DRAMA QUEEN

One of Lindsay Lohan‘s most iconic films, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen tells a story of teenager Lola who struggles moving from New York to suburban New Jersey. There, she meets Carla Santini, a popular girl at Lola’s new school with whom serious cattiness erupts—but not without some early 2000s chicness in the form of metallic berrets, layered henleys, and fishnets.
