The hype for Indiana Jones 5 couldn’t possibly be any higher, but somehow Disney and Lucasfilm will just keep on teasing us for at least eight more months.
The new film features a mix of old and new faces; this is the first Indy film to not be written by George Lucas. Instead, Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and James Mangold are taking the reins as screenwriters for the movie, with the latter directing.
Ford has played the intrepid archeologist and explorer for decades since debuting the character in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, completing the 1980s trilogy inspired by classic film serials in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The franchise was briefly resurrected in 2008 for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull with the intention of passing the torch to Shia LaBeouf as Jones’ son.
While Ford doesn’t think it was an absolute necessity to continue the story of Indiana Jones, most fans would disagree.
Despite his doubts, however, Ford appears glad to have shot Indiana Jones 5, even if filming was difficult at times (like when he injured himself during a fight scene on set).
The difficulty was perhaps increased by director James Mangold wanting to use only practical effects, revealing that he turned down proposals to use CGI studios early in the film’s production.
As for the trailer, D23 Expo attendees got a glimpse of the first sizzle reel at the convention in September. the fast-paced clip teased good ol’ Professor Indy teaching classes, divers plunging underwater, carts racing down streets, a classic train-top battle — oh, and tomb-raiding, of course. As for a full trailer? It’s not here yet, but picture Indiana Jones riding a horse on the New York City subway to pass the time. Hopefully that specific shot from the sizzle reel makes it into the real deal.
Joining Harrison Ford as he reprises his role as Indiana Jones for one last time is newcomer to the franchise Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helena, who plays his goddaughter and is described as an “adventurer and femme fatale.”
Indiana Jones 5 finally wrapped filming in February 2022 and will premiere next year on June 30.
