ADOR’s girl group NewJeans returned with their highly-anticipated first single album, ‘OMG,’ featuring the title song of the same name.
This five-piece girl group might not have debuted until the end of July 2022 but that didn’t stop them to rock the world of the K-pop industry. In just over four months, they broke a variety of sales and streaming records and, last month, became the fastest girl group to win a Daesang at the end-of-year awards shows.
As of January 2, NewJeans’s first single album “OMG” reached 800,000 stock pre-orders. This is almost double the number of about 450,000 stock pre-orders that the girl group achieved with their self-titled debut EP, which previously set the record for the highest achieved by any girl group debut album in history.
Not only did the group break its record in first-day sales, but NewJeans also set a new personal best in first-week sales, just only on the first day of their brand-new album’s release. The record was previously set by their first album which had around 311,271 album sales.
We are never getting over NewJeans. What made them stand-out among the rookie groups and their peers is their take in music is refreshingly retro. Its tracks delved into ’90s and early noughties sounds, with modern production twists woven between to prevent them from sounding dated. ‘OMG’ follows the same tack, continuing to carve out the NewJeans sound with inventive and unique combinations.
Shocking and true, NewJeans has become the 5th K-Pop girl group to have an album selling at least 400,000 copies on the first day of release, after BLACKPINK, IVE, aespa, and LE SSERAFIM.
