You can never go wrong with fashion and we Filipinos find our ways to be entertained and be in one with the growing trends. But looking back, Filipino films are truly serving it. If you’re curious how some of our own films portray fashion in the local scene, keep scrolling.
Four Sisters And A Wedding
Considered as one of the gems here in the local media, Four Sisters and A Wedding might be remembered as one of the best ones in serving fashion. The sisters and the brother are pulling off their personalities on how they work and how they dress in general makes it more iconic—citing example, Gabbie’s matron-wear reflects her maternal instinct, while Alex’s casual rocker chic speaks true to her being the black sheep of the family.
Barcelona: A Love Untold
Featuring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, this gem is really hitting Filipino fans of all ages. Kathryn’s character, Mia, really pulled off the sense of style from tropical dressing to the vibe of a Hispanic. This leaves an impression of us that got searching for elevated casuals and dresses we can wear on a sunny day. The dress that she wore the first time she met Daniel Padilla in a specific scene (graphic floral dress) is truly a standout.
Kimmy Dora: Kambal sa Kiyeme and Kimmy Dora: Temple of Kiyeme
Kimmy Dora is a Filipino comedy film that tells the story of twin sisters portrayed by Eugene Domingo. Kimmy is the sister that rocks the fashion world since she is very rich, can afford all those things in one snap while Dora, on the other hand, is a complete opposite. Kimmy wore structured dresses which struck the words iconic and wow and Dora wore vibrant clothing and unique hair pieces which makes the two personalities a great contrast, and the film—a story so remarkable.
Labs Kita…Okey Ka Lang?
Ticking off the memory box, this 1998 film resonates the real world with a fashion look we always look back on. Played by Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin, Labs Kita Okey Ka Lang? talks about falling in love with your best friend. And what good way to spend a cheesy story in a Baguio-setting? Super cool outfits! For them to truly magnify the feels of a cozy and cool Baguio vibe, the characters wore layered trends in the late 90s subcultures. Jolina Magdangal’s character here isn’t afraid to wear her emotions—whether in yellow shades signifying her youth and friendly personality to wearing something depends on her mood. Comeback, you mean? These looks are actually making their way back again through the rise of TikTok.
Miss Granny
We’re indeed true fans of the film La La Land and tv show Emily and Paris. It’s being nice to see a good Filipino counterpart with great fashion sense so here is Miss Granny. Miss Granny, starring Sarah Geronimo, is about the story of an elderly woman who finds a second chance at youth after going through a life-altering experience at a mysterious photo studio. The film is a perfect portrayal of fashion in the late 60s. It screams with an era filled with A-line dresses, Oxford heels, brooches, and a ribbon-teased hair. Sarah Geronimo’s character here is just a perfect one, absolutely fitting her music taste with a little pinch of throwback.
CONCLUSION
While we get truly inspired watching films inspired from the Westerns, we never truly forget the local cinema. It brings joy that the Filipino film is truly alive by bringing its audience a wild take on substance mainly focusing on themes and fashion design as storytellers. It’s only right that we start reviving and treating costume and wardrobe design as a formidable force in Filipino arts and culture.
