5 Marketing Takeaways We Can Learn From K-pop Giant ‘BTS’

We all do agree, K-pop is taking over the world. And BTS has been a great game changer over the years.

If you look at their own success box, it is undeniably good and they make a strong market. From name recognition, huge sales, engaged community, and massive sustained growth.

The Kings of K-pop have cemented themselves as one of the most influential people on the internet. Perhaps, digital marketing experts can learn a thing or two from BTS and follow some successful social media marketing practices to gain more online exposure.

EFFECTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING

Since the very beginning, BTS have built a massive fanbase by constantly uploading content on social media. Before their first album, BTS frequently posted videos showcasing their slick dance moves and covers of popular songs.

BTS have successfully gained thousands of followers, thanks to effective social media marketing, not just on Facebook but also on other platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.

The social media landscape is competitive and yet BTS succeeded in their marketing campaign by regularly uploading content in various forms, such as blog posts, videos, and even selfies.

COHERENT STORYTELLING

One of the most effective ways to sell yourself in the market is the beauty of having a logical way of storytelling. Try the same coherent storytelling technique by showing a different side of your business. This kind of transparency helps improve your relationship with your customers.

Over time, they will become rest assured that they could put their trust in your business, from your products to services. You can also expect them to spread good words about you, which will help you attract new customers, and that is how transparency helps drive your business to success.

EXPERIENTIAL IS KEY

In concert with brand partnerships and forays into unique markets, BTS also relies heavily on experiential activations (many that they themselves do not attend) outside of their tours.

In 2019, multiple activations appeared world-wide for BTS, including a multi-city gallery curated with polaroid, costumes, and art created by the members since their debut, and a pop-up called “House of BTS” that explored the different eras of the group through different rooms in a house, ending with limited-edition merch available for purchase.

PRE-RELEASE TEASERS

Another BTS marketing strategy, or rather one of the K-pop marketing strategies you need to learn and apply to your brand, is the pre-release teasers. After BTS announced their brief hiatus last December 2021, many fans are eagerly waiting for BTS’s comeback this 2022.

There is even a rumor that is going on that BTS will make a comeback music album this April and a Japanese single in June 2022. Although this news is not official, this pre-release teaser made the Army prepare for their upcoming return for the comeback of BTS. That is how vital pre-release teasers are as a digital marketing strategy since they can make the audience want to learn more about the things they are interested in.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

If there is one thing that sets apart BTS from another K-Pop group, it’s their fanbase. BTS “ARMY” is the definition of evangelist status. With millions of fans around the world, the Army engages with BTS’ content and merchandise, and is especially skilled at self-organizing to bring awareness to the group via various events and social media trends.

These fans have connected to the messages BTS is trying to spread, and they have felt empowered by the group to express themselves and support various causes in the name of the group and or different members. These can include fund-raisers, tree-planting, clean-up events, member birthday meetups, volunteer translating, and more.
