MAMAMOO as the reigning queens of amazing vocals never fails to surprise fans with a lot of solo projects they’ve been doing individually. They do well in terms of groups and doing solos too. What a great catch indeed since all of the members are praised and known for having unique tone of vocal ranges in different genres.
MAMAMOO is a girl group composed of Hwasa, Moonbyul, Solar, and Wheein— they’re not your typical K-pop idols for they are also called the queens of live performances and acapella. The group has won debut in the Bonsang awards or Seoul Music Awards. In 2019, they dominated Mnet Awards; received the award for Favorite Vocal Performance. In 2018, they won the Seoul Music Award for Best Dance Performance. MAMAMOO also received Mnet Asian Music Award for Worldwide Fans’ Choice in 2018. They proved that they do stand as a group and can-do solos in great tracks as well.
Solar, the leader of MAMAMOO, made a very interesting and mesmerizing solo comeback with the song ‘Honey’. Co-written and composed by the vocalist, “Honey” is a chill house track with rhythmic bass synth and a groovy hook that complements Solar’s breathy vocalizations admirably.
The music video is filled with bold colors introducing us to Solar’s bold and strong persona. This unapologetic song dedicated for herself features her personalities—may it be in metaphors of white, yellow, and red.
Aside from showcasing her vocal range in her own solo, she also puts her best face forward. This single really is about her. The song opens on a somber note with a tuneful music box-inspired instrumentals—it welcomes a dull bass and starts with Solar’s low vocal range which makes it so cool.
‘Honey’ music video introduces us to Solar’s alter egos. Each denoted by a specific color, we get to see her various ‘faces’ – be it the cut-throat, suave woman in an avant-garde gown, or the bubbly, cheerful side of her drenched in yellows. Every character and accompanying expression on her face reflects the mood and connotation the color entails. It’s a fitting concept for a song that discusses what makes Solar loved by everyone.
