‘Affairs Of The Art’: The Creative Process Of This Animated Film Is Beyond Belief

‘Affairs Of The Art’ is an Oscar-contending animated short film co-created between Joanna Quinn and Les Mills.

This is a story about a 59-year-old factory worker, Beryl, who is obsessed with drawings and her obsession dominated their household. ‘Affairs of the Art’ circulates around the the story of this household’s obsession ranging from art to other peculiar things.

The production of this film was so interesting it left impact on the viewers.

Who wouldn’t thought that the director of this film, Joanna Quinn, is also the lead animator?

Joanna Quinn, like the character Beryl, is also obsessed with drawings. In fact, she produced a total of 15,000 drawings for this film and it was all hand-drawn. This is really her thing in collaboration with writer-producer, Les Mills. Their dynamic is unstoppable. Their neat application in making this film happen is one thing to applaud for.

PROCESS

Quinn was in-charge with the drawings while Mills was in-charge with dialogue and other movements.

The strength of this film comes from storylines. Quinn made character profiles because every character deserves to stand out. Mills is the one who built the dialogues by observing other families and people out of the mundane and gather how these conversations will apply on film. All the concepts were purely original, out of observations, and personal gathering.

The main character from this film, Beryl, also appeared on Quinn’s other short animated films ‘Girls Night Out’ and ‘Body Beautiful’ (1990), and ‘Dreams & Desire: Family Ties’ (2006) and these films were shot in 16mm and 35mm film formats—which was her default format up to this day. Aside from this, the making is also a combination of hand drawings and paintings to be photocopied later on.

WORLD-CLASS TALENT

Joanna Quinn is an impressive animator and director. Her ideas start with hand drawing everything, to scanning, and then to be transferred on film, coloring in TV paint, and the last roll will be on Adobe After Effects.

This film was inspired by sketch—making it possible for Quinn to do it on hand by pencil brush strokes, which is actually her cup of tea. Apart from being an animator, she also produces and direct commercials from Procter & Gamble and United Airlines.

Quinn is well-known not only in Great Britain but also in cities Rome, New York, Zagreb, Montreal, Gothenburg, Moscow, and Hiroshima.
