Netflix: The Start Of Personalization Changes

Have you seen the latest Netflix update?

Video streaming major ‘Netflix’ introduces a new feature in its rating system that aims to help improve content recommendations for its members. A few weeks back, Netflix teased this new feature and starting April 11, it’s live globally on web, iOS, Android, and other streaming devices.

The feature will enable members to let the service know what types of television series and films they want to see more of, with a new ‘Two Thumbs Up’ feature that will be present on each title on the platform.

We are all different kind of Netflix viewers. We differ in genres and we know that Netflix offers a wide range of genres suitable for all types of people in the world may it be in horror, history, sports, documentaries, and many more.

Netflix currently offers thumbs up/thumbs down rating buttons to help users rate television shows and movies they watch on the service and in return, receive personalized recommendations based on their taste. Taken for example, you fancy Inventing Anna or Bridgerton, most genre recommendations will be synonymous to both of those tv series. This replaced the previous five-star rating system in April 2017, however the current system leads to a more binary response from users, with no specific way for users to indicate any specific show they liked over others.

In a recent blog post and interviews, Netflix Director of Product Innovation Christine Doig-Cardet explained why they added another rating tier:

“Our current Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons are a good way for you to tell us how you feel about a series or film, and in return, you get a profile that’s better personalized to your taste. However, we’ve learned over time that these feelings can go beyond a simple like or dislike.  Providing an additional way to tell us when you’re really into something means a profile with recommendations that better reflect what you enjoy.” She said.

Over the years, Netflix was really planning to incorporate this type of idea so they will know what type of contents sell and what caters to the liking of their customers. It delved deeper into user personalization, either through new features or improvements to its existing ones as it significantly ramps up its content catalog, which makes discovery of these titles more challenging on the platform.

Aside from that, a feature includes the shuffle mode feature—which was recently rebranded as ‘Surprise Me’ from ‘Play Something’ that instantly plays a television show or movie that Netflix believes users may like and haven’t watched as yet, based from previous shows that the user recently watched.

CONCLUSION

With the ongoing improvements Netflix is currently having, users are rest assured that they will be showered with a lot of feel-good and appealing movies and television series that will fit their tastes. This is just a manifestation that this streaming company really listens to the needs of their customers. This is also one important part of improving their name as a brand and a company. The interaction they’ve been getting from their customers globally is just a result of a very effective strategy that the more you listen to the wants and the needs, the more it improves, the more opportunities to continue and prosper in the next years to come.
