The Walking Dead Has Ended After 12 Years – What Now?

After 12 years, 11 seasons, and 177 episodes—The Walking Dead series finale ended with a montage that included the phrase “the end is just the beginning.”

People all over the world are sending their sentiments about the season finale of this highly-anticipated show. For years, “The Walking Dead” was a show that found within its horror-movie conceit a chance to explore questions of grief and loss in ways every bit as resonant and deep as more critically acclaimed show than many other anticipated series with almost the same length.

First premiering in 2010 to rave reviews, The Walking Dead ran for a whopping 11 seasons, comprising 177 episodes. Over the years, critical opinion of the show has flowed as showrunners were swapped out and various cast members and characters left. With the overflowing remarks of positivity, the series has retained a loyal following throughout its run.

Aptly titled ‘Rest in Peace’, its finale followed Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride) and the remaining other survivors assembling for one last stand against a zombie horde.

The episode opened with Daryl busting into the hospital begging for help, only to be met by Commonwealth troopers who knock him out. Meanwhile, the hoard of walkers is coming. Luckily, Judith wakes up long enough to find enough strength to get the doors shut and blocked before passing out on the ground once again beside Daryl.

The Walking Dead series finale features the long-awaited return of both Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne Hawthorne (Danai Gurira). As two of the series most dynamic characters, the brief couple of minutes that they occupy the screen is immediately electric, and also makes clear just how much this franchise missed them.

No more spoilers here but—thankfully there’s more Rick and Michonne on the horizon in the form of their six-episode unnamed spinoff, expected to premiere in 2023.

Fans of The Walking Dead do not have to be too upset about the show concluding as it has already had a number of spin-offs such as Fear the Walking Dead, which will be returning for its eighth season.

Yes, a number of further spin-offs are in development.
