6 years after, Is The Dress White and Gold or Black and Blue?

It’s either white and gold or black and blue.

Six years ago, there’s a good chance your social media feed was ablaze with conflicting views on the actual hue of the garment that has gone viral. But seriously, what in the divine powers of Mystique is this?

Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter were inundated with comments on a woman’s dress colour some years ago and a few individuals experienced black and blue visions, while others saw white and gold ones.

It was a discussion that was built for BuzzFeed with a record-breaking number of people visited the website at once because of the clothing story. As reported by BuzzFeed, the article drew in more than 670,000 unique visitors at its peak period. There were 500,000 unique mobile visits, with half of them reading the dress-related article with the hashtag “#thedress ran at 11,000 views per minute during its first appearance online.

Other news and entertainment websites, including dozens of blogs, also shared their thoughts. BuzzFeed was reportedly overrun with traffic for a short amount of time due to the enthusiasm of the viral discussion. The overly discussed dress picture went viral overnight once it was published on the Internet.

#TheDress was so viral, a man had it as a tattoo.

People of many walks of life, from celebrities to even scientists, weighed in on the topic of colour schemes on Twitter. There were harrowing news stories on visual perception and the phenomena. The answer to the issue, “Blue and black or gold and white?” became one of the hottest debates the internet ever had.

The real color is blue and gold.

As a result of its popularity, the dress became Tumblr’s fifth-most popular viral meme of 2015. More than 38 million people have seen the original article on BuzzFeed. BuzzFeed traffic records were broken as a result of this simple yet utterly interesting post.

Images and memes that became part of the online culture persist long after the original post has been taken down and The Dress was considered to be the perfect example. In many cases, the original material isn’t even necessary for it to persist. Because the garment went viral for such a long time, everyone is familiar with its appearance, thanks to ideas and opinions being passed down from one person to the next. People’s imaginations are filled with images of the garment. It now has the flexibility to exist in many configurations that lives on through time that is part of Internet history forever.
